New Zealand

New Zealand is 100% experiential – impressive glaciers and the balmiest of coastlines.  Queenstown, a South Island ski town, is nestled in the aptly named The Remarkables mountain range.  Think skiing in July!  Then helicopter over glaciers to Milford Sound where waterfalls cascade into pristine waters dotted with sea lions and dolphins.  Next, 4WD through Mount Nelson Range in time for tea and biscuits prepared in a quiet sheep station cottage – seemingly propped by Peter Jackson just for you.  Always be sure to fix your appetites on locally sourced ingredients, wines and brilliant vistas.

Cross over to the North Island to Rotura – a geothermal destination rich with natural hot springs.  Stay on Lake Tarawera to experience an adventurous plunge into a warm pool in the midst of an otherwise icy lake, all the whole soaking in the magnificent views of the volcanic valley.  Once dry and well fed, venture over to Taupo to spend an afternoon in the company of Delani Brown, a vibrant Mauri artist and community leader.  Delani consults with the gods before making a decision.  I’d like to thank the Mauri gods for my time in his company.

Sparkling Auckland is home to lavish super yachts and luxurious boutique hotels. If you can tear yourself away, drive north to hike a few kilometers out to Karekare Point (a memorable black sand beach where Jane Champion filmed The Piano). The mystical view and crashing, surf-worthy waves are well worth every sand-filled step.
