Blue Mosque Istanbul

Blue Mosque Istanbul

Ages ago, when I first ventured to Turkey, it was to grab the quickest flight to Bodrum, to the beach, to the Temple of Apollo, to the nearest blue gullet to sail the Aegean. It was exciting, inexpensive and adventurous.

Now, I think, “Istanbul! Ottoman Architecture. Fishing Villages along the Straights. How long can I stay? How much time to I have to explore the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque, the Bosphorus before going off to enjoy the magic of the canyons of Cappadocia, or heading to Troy to bask in Homer’s verse…?”

Start in Istanbul. Then head south to Cappadocia. Take in every fairy chimney from the magical seat of hot air balloon.  Explore Goreme Open Air Museum by foot as you will not want to miss single church or Byzantine mural.  From Cappadocia, board southbound transport  to experience the mythological gifts of Antalya’s crisp Mediterranean coastline including Hadrian’s Gate, cooling waterfalls, mountains and beaches, beaches and beaches.

When ready, travel west to Bodrum – an Aegean peninsula with a life, and nightlife, all its own.  From Bodrum, catch a Blue Gullet north to Ephesus, Izmir or even as far north as Troy. There are no wrong turns in this once formidable Ottoman Empire!
